Therapist and Couples Counselor in Charlotte, NC
Helping individuals and couples better understand themselves, strengthen their relationships, and create meaningful change.
Live a life full of joy and closeness
Sometimes life looks fine from the outside, but internally you may be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected, or simply stuck. Therapy provides an opportunity to slow down, better understand what's happening beneath the surface, and begin making changes that help you feel more connected to yourself and the people who matter to you.
When life feels harder than it should.
Maybe you've been feeling more anxious, overwhelmed, or disconnected lately. You find yourself overthinking things, becoming frustrated more easily, or struggling to feel like yourself.
Sometimes you know exactly what's bothering you. Other times, it's harder to explain. You just know something doesn't feel quite right.
You may be managing your responsibilities, showing up for the people in your life, and doing everything you're supposed to do, but still feeling unsettled or unfulfilled.
Therapy offers an opportunity to slow down, understand what's happening beneath the surface, and begin making meaningful changes.
The way you feel right now isn't permanent. You don't have to feel stuck. Change is possible, it just takes the right guide to help make it happen.
Counseling can help.
We don't always recognize the patterns that keep us feeling anxious, frustrated, or disconnected. Sometimes the ways we've learned to cope with difficult experiences can actually make it harder to feel the way we want to feel.
Therapy gives us an opportunity to better understand ourselves, recognize what's contributing to our struggles, and explore different ways of responding.
My goal is to help you develop greater awareness, feel more confident in yourself, and experience healthier, more fulfilling relationships.
Feeling better starts with understanding yourself.
Imagine feeling more comfortable in your own skin, more connected in your relationships, and more confident in how you navigate life's challenges.
You don't have to have everything figured out before starting therapy. Sometimes the first step is simply having a conversation about what's been happening and what you'd like to be different.
I'd welcome the opportunity to talk with you and see whether working together feels like a good fit.
I’m here to guide and support you. Let’s talk.

Meet Courtenay
I believe therapy should feel like a conversation where you can be yourself, feel understood, and talk openly about what's happening in your life without fear of judgment.
My approach is warm, conversational, and collaborative. I'm genuinely curious about people: why we think, feel, and respond the way we do, and how our experiences shape our relationships.
I also believe that meaningful therapy goes beyond simply talking about problems. Together, we'll explore patterns, make connections, and develop a deeper understanding of what's happening beneath the surface. Sometimes that means offering support and reassurance, and other times it means gently challenging ways of thinking or responding that may no longer be serving you.
My goal is to help you feel more confident in yourself, more connected in your relationships, and better equipped to navigate life's challenges.
How I Can Help
I see couples, individuals, teens and young adults, in person at my office in SouthPark and online anywhere in North Carolina and South Carolina.
Sometimes couples find themselves feeling more like roommates than partners. Conversations become focused on responsibilities, disagreements go unresolved, and the emotional connection they once enjoyed begins to feel distant.
Many of the couples I work with still love each other and genuinely want their relationship to improve. They may find themselves having the same arguments, feeling misunderstood, or struggling to communicate without becoming defensive or withdrawing.
Often, one partner has been interested in counseling for some time while the other is more hesitant. That's not unusual, and both perspectives are welcome.
My approach isn't about deciding who's right or wrong or taking sides. It's about helping both partners understand the patterns they've developed, what's happening emotionally beneath their reactions, and how they can begin relating to each other differently.
We typically begin with a joint session, followed by individual sessions with each partner. From there, we work together to understand the relationship dynamic and develop healthier ways of communicating and connecting.
I incorporate principles from the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy, combining practical relationship skills with a deeper understanding of each partner's emotional experience.

Individual Counseling and Anxiety Therapy in Charlotte
Anxiety doesn't always look the way we expect it to. Sometimes it's constant worrying, overthinking decisions, or feeling physically tense even when there's no obvious reason. Other times, it's difficulty relaxing, feeling easily overwhelmed, or struggling to quiet your thoughts.
You may recognize that some of your reactions don't quite match the situation, but knowing that doesn't necessarily make them easier to change.
Individual therapy offers an opportunity to explore what's contributing to these feelings, understand the patterns that keep you feeling stuck, and develop healthier ways of responding.
In our work together, we'll look beyond the immediate symptoms to better understand your experiences, relationships, and emotional responses. My goal is to help you feel more grounded, confident, and connected to yourself.
Therapy for High-Functioning Adults in Charlotte
From the outside, your life may look like it's going well. You're managing your responsibilities, maintaining relationships, and doing what's expected of you. People may even see you as the person who always has everything together.
But internally, you may feel anxious, emotionally exhausted, disconnected, or simply dissatisfied in ways that are difficult to explain.
Perhaps you've spent so much time meeting other people's needs or doing what you think you're supposed to do that you've lost touch with what you actually want or need.
Therapy offers an opportunity to explore these feelings without judgment. Together, we can better understand the expectations, experiences, and patterns that may be keeping you stuck and begin making changes that feel more authentic and meaningful to you.
Trauma Therapy and Brainspotting in Charlotte
Sometimes difficult experiences continue to affect us long after they've happened. You may notice yourself reacting strongly to certain situations, feeling anxious or emotionally overwhelmed, or struggling to understand why particular experiences still affect you.
Trauma doesn't always come from one significant event. Sometimes it's the accumulation of experiences that have shaped how you see yourself, relate to others, or respond to stress.
As a certified Brainspotting therapist, I offer an approach that can help clients process difficult experiences and explore emotional responses that may be hard to fully understand or resolve through conversation alone.
Brainspotting can be incorporated into our work when appropriate, depending on your needs, comfort level, and therapeutic goals.
Therapy for Teens and Young Adults in Charlotte
The teenage and young adult years can bring a lot of change. Between friendships, school, family expectations, relationships, and figuring out who you are, it can sometimes feel overwhelming.
For some teens and young adults, anxiety, self-doubt, or difficulty managing emotions can make these transitions even harder. Others may be struggling with confidence, family relationships, or uncertainty about their future.
Therapy provides a supportive space to talk openly, better understand emotions, and develop healthier ways of navigating challenges.
My approach is warm, conversational, and collaborative. I work to help teens and young adults feel comfortable being themselves while building greater self-awareness, confidence, and independence.

If your partner isn't ready to attend couples counseling, you can still benefit from individual therapy. We can explore your concerns, better understand the relationship patterns you're experiencing, and identify changes you can make on your own. If your partner becomes interested in couples counseling, we can discuss the most appropriate next steps.

I'm an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance directly. If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, I can provide a superbill that you may submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. HSA and FSA cards are accepted.
